About the Program
Spirited Canines Programming
Spirited Canines offers two core streams, each offered as either a single upfront payment, or as a monthly package. Service Dog School is for dogs with minimal training, or teams that need more support. It runs for 12 months plus breaks. It brings you from the very basics to advanced obedience.
Our Service Dog Graduation stream is meant for teams that have pre-existing training experience. This program sets you up to take a service dog public access test in Halifax and includes administrative help booking your examination. All teams get the same long term support and check-ins post graduation upon request.
If your dog is determined unsuitable for service work midway through the program you have options: If pre-paid you can use your unused training hours to have a well trained pet dog, or you can transfer training to a different service dog prospect. If paid on a month-month basis, you can pause (or restart) at any time.
We will suggest if upfront payment is a wise choice after a behavioral assessment. Service dogs must have stable nerves, be non-reactive, and safe for public exposure. Some dogs will show excitement or behaviors that can be trained through, while others are not suitable for service work.
Training is delivered through private lessons, drop-off training sessions where I work your dog for you in, or in small outings with other program dogs. Spirited Canines is dedicated to force-free, co-operative, and trauma informed methods.
Spirited Canines offers other specialized services such as learning to groom your own dog, cat training, and therapy dog training. Not sure what you're looking for? Contact us!

What to expect:
Before we begin we will schedule a meet and greet to get an idea of your needs and dog's history. Within the context of a structured plan I will determine what individualization you may need. When we begin we will start with basic skills: building focus, loose leash walking, and basic skills like sit, down and stay. Over the course of the year building on the foundations we will add in complex skills such as settling in place for long periods of time, and navigating crowds. We will also work on your interpersonal skills and handling conflict. Task training will begin in private and then be practiced in public for proofing. As you build skills we will practice in real world settings. This is where we work on your own goals and personal lifestyle. Are you a musician? We'll bring your pup to band practice or a live show. Been wanting to hit the gym, take up running, or love the movies? Service dogs learn on the job! Before graduation and throughout the program we'll look over your paper work together, check that you're secure for housing and travel, and finally we'll book your examination in Halifax. I'll support you and your dog in taking your first flight together, write a letter of support, and celebrate with a special night out where we will write a bucket list of things you want to do with your canine partner. After that, you have unleashed a whole new world of endless opportunities: Enjoy!
